Recording over Several Takes (Punch-Ins)
Many times, a hip-hop song is not recorded all in one take. Instead,
many MCs use punch-ins, a technique in which they record part
of the vocal track, then stop, and then “punch in” the rest of the
track. Most MCs at least record each verse separately, and some
like to punch in line by line, or every four lines, or just to fix mistakes
in a vocal take.
I do as much as I can in one take and then I punch in—it’s
the art of recording, it’s like drawing a picture … recording

You can nail four lines exactly like you wanted to and it’s
like, “OK, well, these other lines could be better compared to
these other four lines,” so you go back. I like doing it like that
because I like to be able to focus on four bars or eight bars at
a time and then making sure that I got those eight bars out
exactly like I wanted them, and then move on.
